EGS European project (Energy-Education-Governance-Schools) and Climate Action Bulgaria Coalition need your cooperation!

On October 24th people around the world will celebrate the International Climate Action Day. We, from the European project EGS (Energy-Education-Governance-Schools) support the International Climate Action Day and would like to invite you to participate in the event organized by the Climate Action Bulgaria Coalition. In 2009 the Global day of the climate movement “350” will be celebrated for the first time in Bulgaria as well.

Joining the actions all around the world the Bulgarian organizers will draw 350 with their bodies and will prepare 350 cups of tea on the square in front of National Palace of Culture in Sofia on October 24th starting at 11 o’clock.

The figure of 350 as well as the tea symbolizes the warming up of the planet and the necessity of urgent actions. After the end of the event the organizers will invite passers-by, politicians and journalists to a cup of tea and a conversation about the climate changes. The “350” event is a part of the civil actions around the world as the culmination this year will be on December 12th – the International Climate Action Day – during the key international negotiations from December 7th till December 18th in Copenhagen for the development of international contract for solving this problem threatening the contemporary civilization.

350 parts per million is what researches conducted by the “350” campaign, show is the safe upper limit for CO2 in our atmosphere. We are already above the safe zone at our current 385 ppm and the Scientists from the “350” campaign have concluded that this is the reason why avalanche-like and in many cases destructive processes have started in different parts of the planet that are related to global warming.

We call all schools in Bulgaria to join the events series around the world and to participate in actions at local level. If you have an interesting idea you can register it at www.350.org, organize a campaign in your town or school and send to the Internet portal pictures from the event. At each event the people will gather for a big group picture which somehow display 350 and will send the picture to 350.org. At the end of the day these pictures will be virtually connected so that as to launch an impressive visual petition from all around the world and it send it to the world leaders that will participate in the negotiations for signing a new global agreement for the climate changes in Copenhagen in December.

The European project EGS aims to enhance the key role of schools in the improvement of energy efficiency and the involvement of local stakeholders as one of the measures against climate change. The EGS initiative strives to encourage and enable schools to become a key actor in the local communities. In Bulgaria the project aims to support schools in their efforts for energy saving. As a first step schools are invited to sign the Manifesto for energy efficiency and to join the action day and to support this initiative. Each signatory school becomes part of a European network. Thus you will have an opportunity to share ideas, experience and best practices as well as to use all learning and training materials developed under the project.
