Short description: SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT ESTABLISHMENTS, A UNIQUE SCHEME IN FRANCE – HIGHER NORMANDY

WHAT IS A SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT ESTABLISHMENT (SDE)?
It is an educational or training institution which is engaged in a process of continuous improvement through a chart based on voluntary commitment inspired by Agenda 21in defined in a school project, which aims gradually to take into consideration the challenges of sustainable development in all its educational policies and in management.
This participatory project is conducted through the implementation of concrete actions.

On these bases, the network has grown significantly. From 25 establishments at the beginning of 2005 to 112 today (2008-2009): 40 secondary schools and 43 lower secondary schools (colleges) -key stage 3 and 4- (37% of secondary schools and 21% of colleges in Higher Normandy), and 5 high schools in vocational Agricultural Education (83%) and 17 primary schools. The IUFM is a SDE since the academic year 2007-2008.

A PARTNERSHIP PROJECT
One of the originality of the programme is to be guided by a steering committee including the main regional stakeholders concerned by the education to sustainable development (School boards, Regional educational authorities, Local / Regional Administrations, civil society and its organizations).

Reflection: IN 2008-2009: A COMMON CHARTER AND A REGIONAL SDE LABEL
Since this academic year the steering committee proposed a regional “SDE label". Three levels of recognition are possible: a first level for confirmation the effective approach, a second level indicating a degree of control with interesting and measurable results, and a third level of recognized excellence. At the annual seminar of SDE- in April 2009 – 25 establishments have obtained the regional SDE label - level 1-.
