Keywords: carbon dioxide, climate change
Age of pupils: 9-99
Learning aims: Every citizen of Germany produces on average more than 10 t of greenhouse gasses (CO2-equivalents) per year. The Climate Balloon is intended to demonstrate this. The Climate Balloon can be used anywhere, where climate change needs to be brought to the attention of many people: on market squares, in schools, at fairs, etc.
Short description: First, the daily CO2 output is calculated and converted into a volume measurement; gaseous CO2 would come to about 15 m³, which is the amount that the (statistically average) German releases each day. The climate balloon has a volume of 15 m³. It is pumped up using a hand pump, which keeps the visitors moving for a half a day. In the meantime, there is the opportunity to discuss climate protection with the visitors. When inflated, the balloon has a diameter of about 3m.
Reflection: The balloon is eye catching, and attracts people. The event must be well-prepared: who is going to speak with people? What message will be communicated? What actions or activities are going to be promoted, if any? What materials can they take home with them? ....
